The Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation (DETO), University of Bari, is allocated at the “General Hospital” in Bari and consists of 18 sections. The DETO has, as its main purpose, basic research, translational and clinical research, which is carried out in collaboration with other universities, with the pharmaceutical industry, with small and medium industries in the field of biotechnology (devices, artificial organs, prostheses and tissues ). The DETO signed agreements and cultural exchanges with European and North American universities to implement research programs funded by public and private institutions, national and international.
Each section of the DETO deals with various aspects of the scientific studies, educational and clinical of its subsidiary. In particular, the Division of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation of DETO, directed by Prof. Loreto Gesualdo, covers all aspects of clinical and research related to kidney disease (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, chronic renal failure and acute transplant). It participates in 38 clinical studies covering different aspects of Nephrology, Dialysis and Kidney Transplant. Numerous clinical studies are designed and led by a team of doctors, biologists, dieticians, clinical monitor, in areas of interest such as nutrition and health, chronic renal failure, home dialysis, nocturnal dialysis, diabetic nephropathy, continuous treatment in sepsis and kidney transplantation.
The Division of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation of DETO has long experience of research in the field of gene expression and molecular biology to study a broad spectrum of renal disease, cardiovascular disease and related complications. Thanks to the different and complementary skills of the staff, were produced several scientific works and implemented several projects in collaboration with national or international organizations.
